C an you imagine the Urban Outfitters head office when they realised the entirety of Instagram was moving away from skinny jeans and into comfy, baggy cargo trousers? What a day that must have been. Having been a streetwear staple for many years, the cargo army pant has now made its way into the mainstream fashion sphere thanks to comfort being the key to every outfit regardless of the occasion, and many, many TikTok trends. What was once a staple of workwear, cargo pants are now readily available at ASOS, so we’ve put together a selection of outfits to give you some outfit inspo regarding what to wear with cargos and reassure you that you can pull them off! Put those jeans back in the drawer, there’s a new kid in town: his name is ‘cargo’ and you are gonna want to be his mate.
Wondering what to wear with cargo trousers? Keep scrolling to take a look at our cargo outfit inspiration and the links to the cargos featured. New styles are being added to ASOS daily, so make sure to keep that wishlist looking nice and healthy by checking their new-in section regularly.
For the first outfit, Jez styles her Topshop cargos with an oversized hoodie to match the boxy lines, and her Yeezy 700 Wave Runners. The pops of black on the 700s tie in with the colour of the Fear of God ESSENTIALS hoodie perfectly, creating a semblance between the top and bottom of the outfit, with the beige cargos slotting in the middle perfectly. The nice straight leg on these cargos would suit a range of sneakers, chunky or otherwise, making them the perfect versatile piece for your wardrobe. If you’re trying to build a capsule collection that limits your pieces, these would be a great addition.
Workwear brand Dickies have been making cargo ttrousers since before they were cool… a long time before! Built to last and able withstand lots of activity, these are some reliable trousers that will stand the test of time. Again coming in that versatile tan colourway with large pockets on the sides and Dickies’ branding labels, Jez has once again tied the top and the kicks together, by pairing her green New Balance 550s with the long-sleeve jersey from Patta, equipped with green accents around the branding and hems. No wonder 550s are taking off this year, they look good with everything!

Now, we all know you can’t go wrong with a puffer jacket! Pairing her The North Face Nuptse with the green Dr. Denim cargos results in a winning combination. The straight leg of the cargo nicely contrasts to the bulky fit of the coat, and the Corteiz tank top underneath brings it all together with a more fitted look. Completed with the coveted Off White x Air Jordan 4 “Sail” that corresponds to the colour of the top, this cargo trouser outfit is a strong 10/10. If you’re wondering what size to buy when purchasing your first The North Face Nuptse puffer jacket, then check out our TNF Jacket Size Guide.
Back to Yeezy! Jez styles the next pair of camouflage cargos with the Yeezy DSRT Boot in “Rock”. The odd hints of tan in the trousers correspond to the army-like style of the footwear, but up top it’s a different story. Styling the bulky shapes of the boots and the cargos with a fitted, asymmetric crop top adds shape to the ‘fit and makes it just that little bit more girly, without going the full way. You could easily throw a dark denim jacket over the top for those chilly evenings. COLLUSION makes excellent trousers and jeans, so it is definitely worth investing in a pair. They have an extensive size range and a lot of their pieces are unisex, so there really is something for everyone. Good old ASOS Design are delivering the goods with their navy cargos. Coming in both regular and petite sizing (great news for our 5 ft. girls!), these cargos take a break from the earthy hues we’ve seen previously, and are a great option if you’re making the shift from jeans to cargos. By tying up the front of the tee, Jez breaks up the outfit, whilst the orange accents on the varsity jacket correspond to the Nike Dunk Low “Syracuse” on foot. There’s a theme here, isn’t there? Matching your sneakers to your top seems to be a winning formula every time.
Looking pretty in pink, these Missyempire cargos are sure to add a splash of colour to your wardrobe if the earthy hues aren’t for you. Paired with a matching graphic tee and our favourite pair of Nike Air Force 1 “Valentine’s Day” makes for one super cute outfit that would be ideal for a day of shopping or brunch with the girls. Consider pairing with a puffer jacket in the winter for warmth, but we can’t wait to wear this outfit in the summer sun and show off the colours to their full potential.
Styling the Aleali May x Jordan 1 “Viotech” is a challenge. One absolutely fire sneaker, but the mismatch of colours makes pairing with outfits a bit of a pain. Opting for dark tones on the cargos, tee and cropped gilet allows the bright female-focused sneakers to stand out. Fun fact, these sneakers were part of a duo released by Aleali and Maya Moore - the first female basketball player to collaborate with the Jordan Brand. If you want to find out more about Aleali May’s awesome career in the footwear industry, read our spotlight article here.
We heard on the grapevine that the Yeezy 500 “Blush” is getting a massive restock! So time to get some inspiration for how to style them. These linen cargos from Stradivarius are nice and lightweight and look so good paired with the same tones. There’s nothing wrong with a monochromatic outfit! Sometimes simple styling is the most effective. Jez opted for a Carhartt jacket jacket, but there’s plenty of other throw-on options on ASOS for you to browse.
As we say with all our style guides, there’s no rule book for what to wear with certain things, but it’s still nice to have some guidance when you’re staring into the abyss of your wardrobe wondering what the hell to wear. Cargos are unbelievably versatile, so all the outfits pictured are definitely interchangeable, meaning you can make the most of your new clothes and not feel guilty about buying things without giving them the wear they deserve.
